The Strides of Social Media
The evolution of social media has taken tremendous strides over the last decade and has become something that many people can’t live without. The average user spends nearly two and a half hours a day on social media scrolling through peoples stories, liking pictures, posting statuses and commenting on the latest trend. The amount of time spent on social media is alarming, however a study with statista.com showed the dramatic increase in social media users within the US population go from 10% to 79% from 2008 through now. That means approximately 247 million people in the U.S. are social media users. Social media has revolutionized the way generations communicate, obtain news, and keep people informed as to what is going on in their life. For instance, older generations love to use Facebook. It is a good spot for them to obtain news, check in with family, post pictures of their family and comment to other users. The younger generation typically prefers Twitter or Instagram because it is fast, delivers a lot of information in a small amount of text. It can be intrusive, but if someone is putting that information out there then it is available for anyone to see. Social media is also a great tool for business owners. Business owners can run social media for events, job fairs, seminars and they can even promote product they are selling.
Putting all politics aside, one of the most memorable ways social media has been used to communicate to a lot of people is the way the President is using it. No other president in history has utilized social media the way Trump has. This has done good things and bad things for him. Some of his tweets are crude, blunt and disrespectful, but when used the right way it can be very informative and beneficial for people to understand what is going on in the world.
Social media is a great outlet for any sports fan. Lesean McCoy, running back for the Buffalo Bills was cut on Saturday August 31st. As soon as it happened the Bills tweeted it and put it on their Facebook, and several minutes later the news was trending. The Bills released a statement thanking McCoy for everything he has done in Buffalo, and the fans commented on the post thanking him and let him know they are sad to see him go. It was nice to see the community come together to show appreciation for someone fans enjoyed watching over the last several years. McCoy also tweeted to Bills mafia thanking them for the love they showed him. Seeing social media used to connect a fan to a famous athlete is something that couldn’t be done without it, and it makes users feel more connected with their idols and friends. After McCoy was cut he was signed the next day by the Kansas City Chiefs which was first reported by Adam Schefter on Twitter. Another way social media delivers users information the moment it happens.
