Building a Website

Building a website is something that can be very meticulous, difficult, but fun at the same time. Creating something that shows the hard work that went into it is a cool experience. Building a website about one’s self was difficult as well. But a website to promote ones self that can be used professionally was rewarding and useful. Students who are graduating over the next semester or two can have this website listed in a resume, and can use it to their benefit. Having a professional photo also helps put a professional touch on the website. Employers love to see a face with a name and its unique to have something like this when trying to get into the workforce full time.

The website can promote someone academically, and with a career. The website can be added to a resume, and used for job interviews etc. The website will be used to promote a portfolio of work that was completed throughout college and professionally. These examples of work are good for employers to see what skills a candidate may have.

The social media projects that were completed during the semester also tie into the website. Having the twitter account that can be clicked on to redirect someone to the actual twitter account is useful. This gives people another outlet to view someone’s work, thoughts, and even just to learn more about that person.  Also, the blog which has several examples of writing work that was done throughout the semester on those projects can be accessed through the website. The portfolio page could include the videos that were made this semester and any examples of work that could be used to benefit someone who is self-promoting.

The necessary tie-ins with social media was primarily Twitter and the blog. It would be nice to have been able to add a Facebook link or some tie in with that. These are necessary because a lot of employers and professionals want to see someone’s social media accounts. Social media gives a lot of background regarding the type of person someone may be and how they think.

Building the website is difficult but following a guide and learning how to do code was a great learning experience. When building a website organization is key. Having all files located in the correct spot, while also avoiding clutter and things that aren’t needed can help build a successful website. There was some difficulty getting certain social media pages to link with the website. Also, getting the site on to the server seems maybe more difficult than building the website itself. Not having access to the Buffalo State server to get the site live was disappointing after spending all that time doing it. It appears google sites wanted users to build the website from the ground up utilizing google software. The Adobe Dreamweaver program was a lot at first, especially for a first-time coder. Having a template to follow helps make building a website a little easier.

Overall the experience of building a website is something that is good to learn for anyone. Most people don’t imagine themselves ever building a website, but its good to have some knowledge regarding it because it could be useful at some point in someone’s life.
