A Twitter Experience

Twitter is one of the most popular platforms of social media in the entire world. The limited number of characters force tweeters to get a point across in a “short and sweet” type of fashion. Twitter is a platform for famous celebrities, political figures, athletes and every day people to get their thoughts out and in front of people. It is fast and immediate which makes it more appealing to the younger generation, where facebook is slow, and often outdated material that is circulated amongst the facebook community.

Twitter is a great tool for businesses to do creative marketing. It also is great for socializing with friends and family but that’s not all it is good for. Twitter can be used as a communicator during times when there is no cell service. In the article “Viral Tweets Are Helping Some People Find Help in Houston. Social Media Can Do Much Better” by Christina Cauterucci is a great example of how Twitter can also be used in a situation of life and death. This article is about the Houston flooding that took place in 2017. During this time 911 services were overwhelmed with other callers that most people who were in danger could not get through for help. These people went to Twitter and posted tweets. For some, the tweets went viral and they were helped by rescue squads. During a time like this prior to social media and Twitter, these people would ‘ve had no other way to get help. The article “How the Boston Marathon Explosions reveal the two sides of Twitter” by Simon Ricketts explains how Twitter was negatively used during that time. During the bombings people were following Twitter non-stop to stay updated with what had happened that day. This article indicates 12 different pieces of information that came out during the bombings and after. Not one of them at the time the article was written was proved to be true. This means that fake news can be spread rapidly amongst Twitter and can often time give Tweeters wrong information.

Twitter can still be useful in many ways. For example, government officials and politicians have been using Twitter to sway voters and communicate their thoughts and ideas to people. The Twitter platform requires these politicians to be very efficient in what they have to say with only having 160 characters.  Twitter is also a great organizational tool. For any business, non-profit, club, or group Twitter can be very useful. Groups can Tweet dates for events or meetings that people can easily follow. They can also promote products or services through tweeting information to followers. Also, Twitter can promote your business for a fee which can expand who sees the organizations twitter account which could increase followers and business.

Over the last several months Twitter has had numerous events and instances go viral. One event that went viral was the wild fires in the Amazon. Twitter raised awareness to U.S. citizens regarding what was happening in the Amazon. It is unfortunate that there was limited information and news coverage on these events until it hit the Twitter platform and went viral. This going viral helped lead to donations and relief help to try to cut down the fires. Another viral event that took place was the Antonio Brown saga. From Brown being traded to the raiders, to his helmet issues, to his feet issues and to his sexual assault issues twitter has covered it. Statements were released by the NFL regarding these issues and by Antonio Brown himself, defending the accusations. Twitter also started to make a mockery of the issues that Brown was facing. Memes and Gifs were all over the news feed regarding Brown. Some of them were inappropriate and should not be joked about, which can be the negative side of Twitter. Lastly the release of the “Joker” movie is also worth noting. During the release of the trailer people were up in arms over the new movie. People thought that a killer and a mentally sick individual was being glorified and some people disagreed with the movie’s motives. Twitter also spread the news of the increased security at all movie theatres that were showing this movie. Twitter helped raise the awareness of how dark this movie is which helps prepare people to see it or sway them to not see it. It also gave notice to the increased security and police coverage while the movie was released so if there ever was a potential shooter that person may think twice before doing it.

Twitter is enjoyable for someone who has specific interests and hobbies. For example, The Office is one of Americas most popular sitcoms. The Office ended several years ago, but the Twitter account for the show does a great job of keeping it alive. The Twitter account posts funny tweets of scenes and quotes from characters that are sure to make a fan laugh. Kim Kardashian is someone people may like to follow as well. She tweets information regarding her family and her products and seems like she cares about big things going on in the United States. Her twitter is exactly what someone would expect it to be. The Buffalo Sabres is an organization that uses Twitter to communicate game times, events, highlights, players birthdays and live score updates can be an enjoyable follow for a Sabres fan. These three accounts were followed because one was a TV show, one was a person, and one was an organization. It shows the different ways Twitter can be used amongst these 3 different accounts.

Twitter is different than blogging and other social media outlets. Twitter limits the characters and forces tweeters to be short and sweet with what is being said. Blogging has no limits to what is being said and is not as fast and immediate as twitter. Facebook is another media outlet that very much different than Twitter. Facebook is slow, and often recycled information be spread amongst the Facebook community. Twitter is current, up to date and fast which is why it is utilized by younger generations.
